What shall I do if I'm unable to collect my prescription?

Updated 4th May 2022

We’ve all been in a position where we’re unable to get to a pharmacy - whether it’s a repeat prescription and you’re too busy with day-to-day life to swing by the pharmacy, or you’ve been prescribed medication because you’re unwell and not feeling up to leaving the comfort of your own home.

Both of these scenarios can be very stressful, and you might be left wondering whether someone can collect your prescription for you. The answer is yes - pharmacists understand that sometimes life get in the way, so are pretty lenient when it comes to getting someone else to collect your prescriptions for you.

Most prescriptions these days are electronic, sent by your Doctor directly to a pharmacy. As it’s your prescription, you can select which pharmacy it gets sent to. If you inform your chosen pharmacy that someone else will collect it, it’s absolutely fine for the medicine to be collected on your behalf.

While most GPs favour electronic prescriptions, sometimes a paper prescription is issued instead. This is not a problem - a friend or relative can still collect this for you if they can confirm your name and address. They can then take the prescription to the pharmacy, but some information has to be filled out on the form beforehand by both you and the friend/relative.

Alternatively, you can order, track, and manage your prescriptions with Healthera; simply download the app and log in using your NHS details. Any existing prescriptions will be automatically synced to the app and you can select your local pharmacy and interact with them directly. Most pharmacies offer a collection service, so you can order your meds and check when they’re ready for yourself or someone else to collect. Some pharmacies even offer delivery services, meaning you can get medicines ordered and delivered directly to your doorstep. Add any over the counter medicines to your order such as paracetamol or hay fever meds for the ultimate convenience.
